How to play 2048
Slide all the tiles one way. When two tiles with the same number meet, they join into one tile with their sum: 2 and 2 make 4, 4 and 4 make 8, and so on. Make a 2048 tile to win.
- Every slide adds a new tile (a 2, or now and then a 4) on an empty square. The board fills up, so keep tiles that can join next to each other.
- A tile joins only once in a slide: 2, 2, 2, 2 slid left makes 4, 4, not 8.
- If nothing can slide the way you chose, nothing happens. Try another way.
- The game ends when the board is full and no two neighbors match. Undo takes back as many moves as you like, and there is no time limit.
- After 2048 you can keep going for a bigger tile; the score counts every join.
Use the arrow buttons under the board, the arrow keys, or swipe across the board on a touch screen. Hint suggests a direction. Choose a 4 by 4 (the classic), 5 by 5 or 6 by 6 board under More. A tip that helps most people: keep your biggest tile in a corner and build toward it.
Keyboard
Choose the board, then the arrow keys slide the tiles. H shows a hint, and Ctrl+Z undoes a move.
Questions
How do you play 2048?
Slide all the tiles up, down, left or right. Two tiles with the same number join into one when they meet, and a new tile appears after every slide. Make a 2048 tile to win.
What happens after I make 2048?
You can keep going. The board gets harder as the numbers grow; players who keep their biggest tile in a corner tend to go furthest.
Is there a time limit or a limit on undo?
No. Take all the time you like, and undo as many moves as you want. Hint suggests a direction when you are not sure.
Is the daily 2048 the same for everyone?
Yes. The daily board starts with the same two tiles for everyone, so you and a friend can compare scores. From there your own moves decide where the new tiles land.
