How to play Russian Solitaire
Russian Solitaire is Yukon built in suit. One deck is dealt into seven columns: no stock and no waste. The first column has one card. Each of the others has some cards face down under five face up. Build all four suits from Ace to King on the foundations to win.
- In the columns, build down in the same suit: the 6 of hearts on the 7 of hearts.
- You can move any face-up card, and every card on top of it goes along, in order or not. Only the card you pick has to fit where it goes.
- A face-down card turns over once the cards on it have moved.
- Only a King, with whatever is on it, can go into an empty column.
- Move Aces to the foundations, then build each suit up in order: 2, 3, 4 and so on. Cards that are safe to send home go there by themselves.
- To move cards, tap the card, then tap where it should go. You can drag instead. Double-tap a card to send it to its foundation.
Undo has no limit, and every daily deal can be won.
Tips
- Building in suit leaves far fewer places for each card than Yukon, so look at every column before you move.
- Uncover the face-down cards in the long columns early: the card you need is often buried there.
- Moving a card from the middle of a column takes everything on it along. Check what that will cover up.
Keyboard
Arrow keys move between cards and piles. Enter or Space selects a card and places it. H shows a hint, Escape cancels a selection, and Ctrl+Z undoes a move.
Questions
How is Russian Solitaire different from Yukon?
The deal and the moves are the same. The difference is building: in Russian Solitaire a card goes on the next higher card of the same suit, where Yukon only asks for the other colour. That makes it a good deal harder.
What goes in an empty column?
Only a King, together with any cards on top of it.
Can every daily deal be won?
Yes. A computer solver that can see every card checks each daily deal before we publish it. Ordinary deals are random, and many of those can't be won.
