How to play Reversi
Reversi is played with discs that are dark on one side and light on the other. You have the dark discs and move first; the computer has the light ones. When the board is full, or neither of you can move, whoever has more discs showing wins.
- The game starts with four discs in the middle, two of each color.
- On your turn, place a disc so that one or more straight lines of the computer's discs lie between your new disc and another of yours. The lines can run across, up and down, or diagonally.
- Every computer disc in those lines turns over to your color. One disc can turn several lines at once.
- You can only play where at least one disc would turn. Those squares are marked with a dot: tap one to play there.
- If you have no move, you pass and the computer goes again. The same goes for the computer.
- After each of its moves, the computer's new disc and the discs it turned stay marked until you play.
Choose how strong the computer is above the board: Easy, Medium or Hard. Undo takes back your last move and the computer's reply, as many times as you like. Hint suggests a good move.
Tips
- Corners are the best squares on the board: a disc in a corner can never be turned back.
- Be careful with the squares right next to an empty corner. Playing there often lets the computer take the corner.
- Turning the most discs isn't always best early on. Having more squares to choose from later usually matters more.
- Edges are strong too, once you can hold them without giving away a corner.
Keyboard
Arrow keys move between the squares. Press Enter or Space to play on the square you're on. H shows a hint and Ctrl+Z undoes.
Questions
Where can I play?
On any empty square where your disc would trap at least one straight line of the computer's discs against another of yours. Those squares are marked with a dot, so you never have to work it out yourself.
What happens if I can't move?
You pass, and the computer plays again. If neither of you can move, the game ends and the discs are counted.
Who moves first?
You do, with the dark discs. The game starts with two discs of each color in the middle.
How strong is the computer?
Easy often plays a careless move. Medium looks a few moves ahead. Hard looks further, and near the end it works the game out exactly. You can change the level at any time, and Undo takes back a move.
