How to play Rummy
Rummy, the basic game, for two players here: you and the computer. Each of you gets 10 cards. The next card is turned up to start the discard pile, which is spread out so you can see what has gone.
- On your turn, draw the top card of the stock or take the top card of the discard pile. Only the top card: that is the difference from Rummy 500.
- Melds are sets of three or four cards of the same rank (three 8s) and runs of three or more cards in a row in one suit (5, 6, 7 of hearts). An Ace can be low (A, 2, 3) or high (Q, K, A), but not both at once. You may put melds down whenever you like, or keep them in your hand.
- You can lay off cards on any meld on the table, yours or the computer's: a fourth 8 on a set of 8s, or the 8 of hearts on a run that ends with the 7.
- End your turn by discarding one card.
- The hand ends when someone has no cards left. They score every card still in the other player's hand: picture cards 10, an Ace 1, the rest their number. If the stock runs out, the discard pile is turned over to make a new one.
- The first player to 100 wins.
To meld, tap the cards in your hand to choose them, then choose Meld. To lay off, choose one card, then tap the meld it goes on. A gray line under a card on the table means the computer put it there. There's no Undo, because you're playing against the computer.
Keyboard
Tab moves between the stock, the discard pile, the melds and your cards. Enter or Space draws, chooses a card or lays it off. H shows a hint and Escape clears your choice.
Questions
How is Rummy different from Rummy 500?
In Rummy you can take only the top card of the discard pile, and you needn't meld it. The hand ends when someone goes out, and they score every card the other player still holds. First to 100 wins.
What do the cards count?
Picture cards 10, an Ace 1, and the rest their number. The cards count against the player caught holding them.
What happens when the stock runs out?
The discard pile is turned over, all but its top card, to make a new stock, and play goes on.
Why is there no Undo?
You're playing against the computer, so taking a move back after seeing its reply wouldn't be fair. Hint suggests a good move.
