How to play Gin Rummy
Gin Rummy is for two players: you and the computer. Each of you gets 10 cards. The rest are the stock, with the top card turned up to start the discard pile. The aim is to arrange your hand into melds and get rid of the rest.
- A meld is a set of three or four cards of the same rank (three 7s), or a run of three or more in one suit (4, 5, 6 of hearts). Aces are low: A, 2, 3 is a run, but Q, K, A isn't.
- On your turn, take the top discard or the top card of the stock, then discard one card. You can't throw back the card you just took from the discard pile.
- Cards not in a meld are deadwood. Aces count 1, number cards their value, and Jacks, Queens and Kings 10. The game groups your melds and shows your deadwood as you play.
- Knock by discarding when your deadwood is 10 or less. The computer then lays off any cards that fit your melds. You score the difference in deadwood.
- If the other player's deadwood is as low as yours or lower, that's an undercut: they score the difference plus 25.
- Gin is a hand with no deadwood after your discard: 25 points plus the other player's deadwood, with no laying off. Big Gin, all 11 cards in melds before you discard, scores 31 plus their deadwood.
- The first player to 100 wins the game. Then each player adds 20 for every hand they won. If the stock gets down to two cards with no knock, the hand is a draw.
- To discard, tap a card, then tap the discard pile. You can double-tap a card or drag it there instead.
Classic (Pagat) scoring, under the board, uses gin 20 and undercut 10 instead.

Questions
When can I knock?
When the cards that aren't in a meld (your deadwood) add up to 10 or less after you discard. Aces count 1, number cards their value, and Jacks, Queens and Kings 10. A Knock button appears when you can.
How does scoring work here?
Knocking scores the difference in deadwood. Gin scores 25 plus the other player's deadwood, Big Gin 31. If the player who didn't knock has as little deadwood or less, that's an undercut: they score the difference plus 25. First to 100 wins, and each hand won adds 20 at the end. Choose Classic scoring for gin 20 and undercut 10.
Is Gin Rummy played with 7 or 10 cards?
Ten. Each player gets 10 cards, and you hold 11 for a moment after you draw, before you discard.
Why is there no Undo?
You're playing against the computer, so taking a move back after seeing its reply wouldn't be fair. Hint suggests a good move if you're unsure.
