How to play Word Chain
Word Chain is a column of words where each word joins the one below it to make a new word. SUN and FLOWER make SUNFLOWER; FLOWER and POT make FLOWERPOT; POT and LUCK make POTLUCK. The first and last words are given. Your job is to fill in the words between them.
- Each hidden word shows its first letter and a square for each of its other letters.
- Tap a word and type it. When the last square is filled, the word is checked: a right word turns green and the two new words it makes are shown.
- If a word doesn't fit, it's marked. Press Backspace and try another.
- Sometimes more than one word fits. Any word that makes a real word with both of its neighbors counts.
- Reveal letter gives you the next letter of the word you're on. Undo takes back any change.
Tips
- Work from both ends. The word after the first one must follow it; the word before the last one must come in front of it.
- Say the words out loud: "fire...", "...place". Everyday compound words often come to mind faster spoken than seen.
- Easy has two words to find, Medium three and Hard four. The daily chain is Medium.
Keyboard
Type letters to fill the word you're on. The arrow keys move between words; Backspace takes off a letter; Enter jumps to the next word you haven't solved. Ctrl+Z (⌘+Z on a Mac) undoes.
Questions
What is a compound word?
Two words joined to make a new one, like SUNFLOWER (sun and flower) or DOORBELL (door and bell). Every link in the chain is an everyday compound word.
What if another word fits?
It counts. Any word with the right first letter and length that makes a real word with both of its neighbors is accepted.
Is there a new chain every day?
Yes. The daily chain is the same for everyone and changes at your midnight. New puzzle gives you another one whenever you like, on Easy, Medium or Hard.
