How to play Kakuro

Kakuro is a crossword made of numbers. Fill every white square with a digit from 1 to 9. Each black square with a number is a clue: the number above its diagonal line is the total of the white squares to its right, and the number below the line is the total of the white squares beneath it.

Choose a size above the grid: Easy, Medium or Hard. Notes lets you pencil in the digits a square might be. Check marks wrong squares with a dashed outline, and Hint fills in the square you've chosen. Undo and Redo have no limit.

Tips

Keyboard

Arrow keys move between white squares, skipping the black ones. Type a digit to fill a square, or hold Shift to add it as a note. N turns notes on and off, Delete clears a square, Ctrl+Z undoes and Ctrl+Y redoes.

Questions

How do you play Kakuro?

Fill each white square with a digit from 1 to 9. The clue above a black square's diagonal is the total of the white squares to its right; the clue below is the total of those beneath it. No digit repeats within a run.

Where should I start?

Look for totals that can only be made one way. Two squares that add up to 3 must be 1 and 2; two that add up to 17 must be 8 and 9. The line under the grid lists the sets for the square you've chosen when there are only a few.

Does every puzzle have one solution?

Yes. A solver checks every puzzle before it goes on the site and keeps only those with exactly one solution.

Is Kakuro like Killer Sudoku?

They share the adding up, and no repeated digits within a group. Kakuro has no rows, columns or boxes to fill, though: just the runs of white squares between the clues.
